About an hour out of Hanoi, I boarded a small ship to cruise Ha Long Bay for 3 days. After another transportation nightmare (that I won’t even go into), i made it to the pier and boarded the ship. Beautiful room, comfortable bed, BONUS. We headed out into one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in my life. It was overcast, but even that could not dull the spectacular views.
Day 1 – We stopped at Titop Island (named after a close friend of Ho Chi Minh) where we could swim or climb to the top of the mountain to see the views. Since I don’t swim, I decided that the “million” steps to the top would be the best thing. Half-way up, I was grateful for the overcast and cooler weather. I was a long climb, but the view was worth it.

From there we went to a cove where we could kayak around a small cove. Paddling through the Luon Cave cave to get there was amazing. The water is emerald green and the views, again spectacular. I did, however, have to dodge a bamboo boat when trying to get back to the dock. I literally ran right into me and I had to push myself away with my hands. Guess I didn’t have the right-of-way…..

Great dinner with a other “solo” travelers AND the BEST night’s sleep I’ve had in al long time!
Day 2 – We boarded a smaller boat and headed out for the day. We stopped at the Trinh Nu Cave (Virgin Cave), a pearl farm and spent time just relaxing on the boat. The weather cleared up and it was lovely. I spent time with a couple from Vancouver, BC, a couple from Denmark & a chef who owns a restaurant in Milan. Of course, you know I couldn’t resist asking the two couples what they thought of the US taking over Canada and Greenland. They started laughing, then expressing their disgust about our current President and his policies.

We had a great dinner, and I was actually “forced” to sing my one karaoke song. Anyone who has spend much time with me will know the song I chose…”These Boots Are Made for Walking.”
It was great to spend time with special people, and I was thrilled to have company on this trip. Hope to meet up again on future travels.
Day 3 – We visited the largest cave in Ha Long, Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave. It was huge and amazing. After that, we headed back to the pier to return to Hanoi.

Ha Long Bay – One of those places that actually exceed your expectations. If you ever get the opportunity, DO IT.
