Fast train to Segovia

Segovia is a city in Spain with a rich historical and cultural heritage. It is famous for its Roman aqueduct, Gothic cathedral and Alcázar fortress, all declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

We took a high-speed train (my first) from Madrid to Segovia. I fell in love with this place as soon as I stepped out of the taxi next to the towering aqueduct that runs straight through the center of the town. It felt like I had stepped back in time. Pretty sure I could live in this beautiful city.

Roman Aqueduct

Cathedral de Segovia

After Segovia’s old cathedral was destroyed in the Revolt of the Comuneros in 1520 a new one was constructed high in the former Jewish Quarter, some distance from the Alcázar where it would be out of harm’s way. Despite being built in the renaissance, this magnificent building was constructed in an old-fashioned gothic style, and so is one of Europe’s newest original gothic structures.

And a duck store….

And in the middle of all of this cultural and history, is a rubber duck store! I wanted to buy one of each for the grandsons, as they like to collect them. I’ve never seen an actual duck store.

Alcázar of Segovia

High on a crag and dominating Segovia’s western skyline, this celebrated palace has Roman and Moorish origins, but its storybook renaissance appearance dates to the 16th-century reign of Felipe II. Numerous Castilian monarchs lived at the Alcázar, like the Catholic Queen Isabella in the late 15th century.
