Back to Spain: Figueres & Girona

Road trip to Spain

Spain is about an hour’s drive from Argeles sur-mer (France), and my friends invited me to join them on a road trip to visit Figueres and Girona. Of course, I’m always up for a new experience and spending time with friends made it even better.

Figueres

Figueres is in the Girona region of Catalonia, Spain. The main thing the city is known for is being the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. He wasn’t just born there though, he lived and breathed Figueres. He lived there with his wife and was buried there. It is also where he set up his museum – The Dalí Theatre-Museum – with the largest collection of his work.

Figueres is not a large city, and we spent more time sitting in the plaza enjoying Spanish pastries and coffees than we did sightseeing.

Girona

The capital of its own province in northeast Catalonia, Girona is a beautiful medieval city with one of Spain’s last surviving Jewish quarters.

rom Napoleon to the Moors 800 years earlier, a lot of people have wanted to get their hands on Girona. The city has faced 25 sieges in its history, which explains why it is completely surrounded by high fortifications that are still standing today.

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones you’ll have seen Girona’s dignified grey stone streets in Season Six when it appears as Braavos.

Girona is now on my list of favorite places. I will definitely be going back to stay longer.

Just for fun

The older villages in the area are cobble stoned or paved. There are lots of green areas, but they are outside of the main village.

This means that there are no good places for cats to go to the bathroom. So, in lieu of a yard, they use the dirt in potted plants along the streets. To keep this from happening, people put rocks and pine cones in the pots to keep them out. If you don’t figure out a way to keep the out of your pots, you will be scooping poop….from someone else’s pets.
