Last few days in Bangkok

I leave on an overnight train to Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, later this afternoon. The last few days have been wonderful. So much to see…so little time, especially when the hot weather does a number on me and I have to slow down my roll at bit.

I visited the Jim Thompson house. He was an American merchant credited with bring the silk trade to the west. He build his Bangkok home in 1958 and disappeared in Malaysia in 1967. He was also a collector of Asian art and was known as the “Thai Silk King”.

Yesterday, I started slow because I planned to visit the Chinatown Night Market in the evening. I went shopping which is pretty tricky because whatever I buy HAS to fit in my already stuffed backpack and suitcase. However, I did manage to purchase a shirt (at American Eagle, no less). Got to keep these white arms and neck protected from the sun. And, I took a tuk tuk (my first & only time) back to the hotel.

I headed out in the evening to Chinatown and that was an experience. Hot and very crowded, but worth the trip. I had deep-fried duck egg rolls for dinner. Delicious! There are a great deal of odd foods in Thailand that I don’t recognize either the shape, size or taste. I’ve stayed away from deep-fried duck beaks and chicken feet. Also, not anxious to try pig stomach or intestines.

AND…now I’m on to the next stage of my adventure. I hear the food in Chiang Mai is some of the best in the world. Can’t wait to try it.
