My Son Sanctuary

I booked a tour the My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a collection of ancient Hindu temples built by the Champa civilization between the 4th and 13th centuries. It is located in Quang Nam Province, about an hour southwest of Hoi An, and is known for its intricate architecture and historical significance.

My Son is a unique Hindu sanctuary. The site once contained over 70 structures of brick and stone, dedicated mostly to the deities Shiva, Krishna, and Vishnu. Unfortunately, 70 percent of the temples were destroyed in 1969 by bombs dropped during the Vietnam War, as it was used a a base camp for the Viet Cong. The surrounding area is still dangerous because of the presence of unexploded land mines. In 1937, French scholars began restoring some of the temples.

The temple complex was built in a valley, surrounded by a tall mountain where the gods lived, and a flowing stream. All pointing to a holy place. The scenery around the temple is as beautiful as the temple.

I toured this site with a small group which was great as I was able to spend time with people from other countries. Always nice to spend time with others.
